Bouncing Universes in String-inspired Gravity
We consider the effects on cosmology of higher-derivative modifications of (effective) gravity that make it asymptotically free without introducing ghosts. The weakening of gravity at short distances allows pressure to prevent the singularity, producing a solution with contraction preceding expansion.

متن کاملBindin from a sea star.
The genetic basis for the evolution of development includes genes that encode proteins expressed on the surfaces of sperm and eggs. Previous studies of the sperm acrosomal protein bindin have helped to characterize the adaptive evolution of gamete compatibility and speciation in sea urchins. The absence of evidence for bindin expression in taxa other than the Echinoidea has limited such studies...
متن کاملCoupling of bouncing-ball modes to the chaotic sea and their counting function.
We study the coupling of bouncing-ball modes to chaotic modes in two-dimensional billiards with two parallel boundary segments. Analytically, we predict the corresponding decay rates using the fictitious integrable system approach. Agreement with numerically determined rates is found for the stadium and the cosine billiard. We use this result to predict the asymptotic behavior of the counting f...
متن کاملBouncing and Colliding Branes
In a braneworld description of our universe, we must allow for the possibility of having dynamical branes around the time of the big bang. Some properties of such domain walls in motion are discussed here, for example the ability of negative-tension domain walls to bounce off spacetime singularities and the consequences for cosmological perturbations. In this context, we will also review a coll...
